The Skills of Heavy-Punching World Champion, Ilunga Makabu, Put to the Ultimate Test in Fight Against Canelo Alvarez
The World Boxing Council has just given the go-ahead for a starlit match between WBC Ilunga Makabu (28-2, 25 KO’s); a cruiserweight who is a force to be reckoned with, and Santos Canelo Alvarez (57-1-2). Alvarez has met his match in Congo-born fighter Makuba who has an impressive track record of success in the ring.
31-year old Canelo is the first-ever undisputed champion in the super middleweight class and also holds unified titles in three weight classes; a true star in his field. The world champion, known for his unique punching style, is currently the world’s best boxer, pound-for-pound, according to sources such as ESPN, The Ring, and the Boxing Writers Association of America. Having been a professional boxer since the age of 15 and still going strong, Alvarez is truly a boxer who will stop at nothing to win world titles.
6’0”, 41-year old Ilunga Makabu has held the WBC cruiserweight title for almost two years. According to The Ring Magazine, BoxRec, and the Transnational Boxing Rankings Board, Makabu is the globe's second-best active cruiserweight.
If Canelo does win this match, he will become a 5-division world champion. While Alvarez boasts an 11 knockout win over Caleb Plant, an unbeaten American professional super middleweight boxer, he may very well be meeting his match when he does up against Makabu in this much-anticipated upcoming match.
Fans and Canelos' head trainers alike are excited at the chance of Alvarez to win over Makabu. “We know that Makabu is strong, but Canelo can beat him”, says Eddie Renoso who is also Alvarez’s manager. “I have a lot of confidence in Canelo”, he adds. While Makabu is bigger than Canelo, fans and trainers alike agree that he has the capacity to win this match undoubtedly.
May 2022 will debut a bout that is sure to spark talk in the boxing world. With the weight class shifting for this rumble, a max limit of 200-pounds, there may be some growing pains as this is new territory for Alvarez whose former ring weight specs were set at a limit of 168 pounds. While Makabu’s previous fight against Durodola (36-8, 33 KO’s) won him a title defense, this rumble may not be so victorious, with his opponent, Alvarez, having an impressive resume.
